Christmas is over for another year and we just have New Year’s Eve left for our annual week of festivities. How did you cope? Were you stressed and frazzled in the days leading up to Christmas or were you organised and in total control? Many women I know find it really stressful, mainly due to the unrealistic expectations everyone seems to have. I always think Christmas is a prime example of how people put the needs of others first and then are unable to enjoy the holiday themselves. I remember that my mother often spent much of Boxing Day lying on her bed after having an extended family of up to 16 on Christmas Day.
It isn’t being selfish to give yourself some thought over the holiday period. If you make yourself ill and you are the only one who knows where everything is and what needs to be done, it will spoil everyone’s fun. Ask for help. You may be surprised how happy people are to be doing something rather than sitting around being waited on! Is it really true that you are the only one who can lay the table, run out to the shop, wrap presents, write cards..?..the list goes on.
Set aside some time to sit quietly on your own with a cup of tea, watch a film YOU want to see, get out and go for a walk….again the list is endless. You deserve to take it easy over the holiday as much as anyone else.
Give some thought as to how you could take better care of yourself and be kinder to yourself during 2014. Resolutions rarely work, but make a list of intentions as a starting point. Maybe there is a class you want to take or a group you want to join.
Self-care is at the heart of the system of Reiki, in fact you must look after yourself first in order to be able to help others; meditation or mindfulness practice is another way to show yourself some compassion. Both these practises help you to feel calmer and more in control of what is going on around you.
