When the news is full of disaster and distress as it has been in excess lately, I often hear people say that they never watch the news or read newspapers. While I can understand why they might feel that is the best course of action, the truth is that we are all here living on planet Earth, living a physical life engaging with our fellow human beings. If we don’t interact with the world around us, are we truly experiencing life on Earth at this moment in time?

In turning away from stories of death, destruction and chaos we fail to see the other side…the stories of bravery, compassion, love and peace. We can’t have one without the other. The only way to deal with fear is to replace it with love, not to respond with more fear. Not keeping up with news doesn’t mean that you are taking a more spiritual path, it means you are missing the opportunity to add your love to the collective energy that is needed right now to counterbalance  the energy of fear.

I’m not suggesting that you sit glued to 24 hour news channels or read every article published. I’m suggesting that you make yourself aware of what is going on and look for the positive stories behind the headlines. They are there. I know that some of you are really sensitive, but maybe you should be thinking about how you could use that to advantage rather than as an excuse to withdraw from the world. Peace will only be possible when all of us feel peace in our hearts.

Anger, hatred and fear cannot exist in the face of overwhelming love. Become part of the solution.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
~Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches
